Most Searched Keywords

(And Your Web Pages)

Your most searched keywords (the ones related to your website that are most often searched for by people on the Internet) should be what you use to name your second and third level pages on your website. That way, the search engines know what the page is about and what your hot keywords and search keywords are and your human readers will know as well.

I get my keywords primarily from 2 sources by the way. Site Build It has a Keyword Search Tool that I use and Google Adsense has a free tool that you can also use (Adwords Keywords Tool). Together, they helped me to come up with the name of this page, "Most Searched Keywords" and later I will tell you how it evolved. But first, let's talk about some keyword and web page basics.

Save Them As Real Names

bananas One thing to think about when you are creating a web page is that you should save them as real names. What do I mean? I mean that if you create a page about "Banana Peeling" Don't save this page to your website as "bp1.html" or "page 2.html". Save it as "banana-peeling.html" so that both the search engines and people would know what the page is about.

(I'm assuming here that "Banana Peeling" is one of the most searched keywords you might have identified from your [fictional] "Best Bananas" site research.)

One Specific Keyword Per Page

Also, focus on one specific keyword per page and use it slightly more than your high school English teacher taught was "good English". Then blend in other keywords from your Master Keyword List (Site Build It) or the Adwords Keyword Tool into the body of your page. (You can add other words to the keyword and use synonyms and variations as well.) This will help you to get the correct "keyword density" on your page - a subject I will cover on another page of this site.

Make it a point to use your most searched keywords more often in the opening and closing paragraphs and particularly in your opening sentence and then scatter it throughout your page. Mention it more often in the top and bottom of your page and less in the middle. Search engines like that! You do have to watch that you don't mention it too often though or they may think you're just trying to fool them and they may penalize you if that happens. (I most often have the opposite problem and have to find ways to sneak my most searched keywords into the text - like here!)

How much is too much? I don't know but Site Build It has a built-in assessment tool that tells me when I have enough and when I have mentioned it too much. I go by that.

So, create your content around a specific subject for the page then be sure that the page is designed so that the search engine clearly understands what is important on the page. Be sure to design it with high traffic keyword phrases in mind. Search engines love to find good content and information. It's what they do. If your web page has good information and is designed in a way to let the engines know what the important information is, you will get traffic.

Where Did "Most Searched Keywords" come from?

So, how did I end up with "Most Searched Keywords" as a title and name for this page?

Well, first I went to my "Brainstormer" in Site Build It and entered "keywords" and got a whole list of words which I was able to reduce to about 100 by looking at how often a word or phrase was looked for and how many websites had the word or phrase on them (demand and supply).

Then, I went to Google Adwords and did the same kind of search and "lo and behold", the same phrase came up in both (most searched keywords) and it seemed to have reasonably high demand and low supply, so I picked it! Some others were close (search keywords, hot keywords) but I can use them on this page as well or maybe they will be the subject of their own page at some other time.

Something Else

I'm going to touch on something else here that is closely related to the naming of your website pages but involves a little knowledge of HTML (computer language) as well. Don't panic! You don't need to know this necessarily and systems like Site Build It have automated this so you don't really need it but, after working on web pages for a while, you come to know some of these basic terms anyway.

html (This may turn out to be the subject of another page for me down the line as I expand on it, but for now, this is something you might want to know.)

At the top of every Internet page is what people call "Head Data". Here's what it looks like in HTML format:

<head>
<title>Peeling Bananas</title>
<meta name="description" content="How to peel bananas correctly (without bruising them).">
<meta name="keywords" content="peeling bananas, bananas, fruits">
</head>

You have to make sure that your keyword is correct and prominent in the "Head Data" primarily for the search engines. The visitors to your site won't see this information. (If they did a search for it through a search engine though, they would likely have seen the title and description on the search page they got back.)

How do you make sure that it is there? Well, if you are using SBI it is done automatically for you. If you want to check a page however, all you have to do in Internet Explorer is to click on the "View" tab in the top left of your screen and then on "Source". That should show you whether or not you have the "<head>" information on your page and correct. If not, you can make the changes and save them and then re-upload the page.

OK, so we've talked about your most searched keywords, your hot keywords and your search keywords and how to name your pages to reflect them. On the next page we'll talk about page content and why it is so important. Don't miss it.
